Home Series: Makeup and Vanity Organization
Spring is definitely the time where we start thinking about our house projects for the year, and also when we tend to organize the house! This winter we’ve tackled all of our closets – from clothes to linens to our front utility closet, everything has been cleaned out and reorganized. It’s a nice way to pass the time while stuck indoors (which many of us will be for a while!) and make your space more enjoyable and functional.
Earlier this week I tackled my vanity drawers, and cleaned/organized all of my makeup, nail polish, and beauty products. I had a lot of responses to my stories about it, so I thought I’d put my links and sources here in case you want to do this yourself! I started by dumping everything out on the floor, sorting it by category, and throwing out anything that was super old (lots of dried up nail polish)! I wiped down everything that I kept with a damp cloth, and cleaned my eyeshadow palettes and compacts. To clean up the palettes, I wiped up excess product with a cotton round and Micellar water, and then spritzed the entire palette with alcohol in a spray bottle to make sure the product was disinfected. I don’t do this often, but want to make an effort to! I clean my brushes all the time, though, using this solid cleanser from Sephora. It’s a great value and lasts a long time!
For storage, I keep most of my makeup in the top drawer of the vanity, and put my daily go-tos in this gold/glass organizer that stays out — it holds pretty much anything that I don’t want to dig around for. I don’t keep my foundation or larger items there, since they’re easy to find in the drawer — moreso it’s my bronzers, brow pencil, mascara, current lipstick favorites, etc. I also put anything with really displayable packaging out to enjoy :)
My husband got me hooked on these awesome drawer dividers, we have them all over the house! They don’t slip and keep everything in place when opening/closing the drawer. There are tons of sizes, so I’d recommend measuring your drawer and planning a rough layout before ordering. The longer containers are perfect for eyeshadow palettes and larger bottles, while the small square one is great for pencil sharpeners and sample size products. I have four medium sized ones below, they’re just rotated different ways — it’s sort of a puzzle and you can set it up however you want to! It felt great to put everything back knowing it was all clean and easier to access.
You can see the gold organizer better from this angle — I have things separated by category/packaging size, so they fit nicely and make sense while getting ready. I love having my pencils, concealers, and skinnier items standing up so they’re easier to find and grab. I used to keep my makeup brushes in a few cute candle jars, but found the one I’m currently using to be the most functional — the bottom pops off, too, so you can clean it easily. I’m a huge fan of The Container Store — if none of these items work for your specific needs, they’ll surely have something else that works with your space. Call me crazy but this was a fun way to spend an afternoon — pop on some Netflix while you work and you’ll be glad you did it!
